Intercept or win the next ball

Anticipate the next pass, rebound or second ball as the unit recovers.

Required player actions

  • #4 or #5 contests the first long ball while the partner covers the space behind the duel.
  • #6 anticipates the drop and the interiors close nearby second-ball options without crowding the same space.
  • The closest defender attacks an interceptable next pass; #1 and the line reset if the opponent secures it.

A starting picture for the practice, with the focus players highlighted. Both teams keep their 4-3-3 roles; movement and decisions develop through live play.

Organization

11v11 on a full pitch with two regulation goals, normal offside and both teams in a 4-3-3. Restart with an opposition centre-back able to play long toward their striker; both teams occupy normal match positions.

Practice task

As the long ball travels, our back four drop and narrow. One centre-back challenges, the partner covers and #6, #8 and #10 adjust to the likely drop. Continue toward either goal after the next contact.

What to observe

The first duel has depth cover, and our midfield reaches the second ball with a useful forward or secure next action.

Progression

Allow the striker to flick on, cushion backward or leave the ball for a runner, changing the second-ball location.
