TEAM PRINCIPLERecover when pressure is brokenSUB-PRINCIPLE

Reapply pressure

Press again when a covering teammate makes it possible.

Required player actions

  • The beaten winger or interior recovers toward the ball and challenges from behind only when the ball is reachable.
  • The next midfielder steps to the receiver when a teammate covers the space being left.
  • After a switch, the new ball-side winger and fullback re-establish pressure while the rest of the team shifts.
COACHING QUESTION

Can you affect the ball without exposing the team?

A starting picture for the practice, with the focus players highlighted. Both teams keep their 4-3-3 roles; movement and decisions develop through live play.

Organization

11v11 on a full pitch with two regulation goals, normal offside and both teams in a 4-3-3. Start with the opposition playing a live pass through our front three to a midfielder near halfway.

Practice task

The nearest of #8 or #10 steps when #6 can cover; the beaten presser recovers to help without fouling. The back four adjust to forward runs. If cover is absent, delay until support arrives.

What to observe

The receiver is pressured again before progressing freely, with a connected covering player behind the new presser.

Progression

Vary whether the receiver turns, lays off or carries, so the recovering players must select a new pressure point.
