Find a player beyond pressure

Connect a free teammate between lines or behind the defence.

Required player actions

  • 6 scans beyond the nearest teammate before choosing the forward pass.
  • 8 receives between lines with a body shape that keeps the next forward action available.
  • 9 stays alert to a pass behind when the midfield line leaves the deeper route open.
COACHING QUESTION

Starting picture · Blue: Northbridge · Sand: opposition · Gold rings: focus players · White dot: ball

A starting picture for the practice, with the focus players highlighted. Both teams keep their 4-3-3 roles; movement and decisions develop through live play.

Organization

11v11, full pitch, two goals, both teams in 4-3-3 and normal offside. Start with 6 facing the opposition midfield.

Practice task

8 and 10 seek separate pockets beyond pressure. 6 connects the free receiver with appropriate pace or moves the ball elsewhere if the lane is closed.

What to observe

The pass removes a defensive line and the receiver can retain or advance immediately.

Progression

Let the opposition alternate screening the pass and stepping tightly onto the receiver.
