Session objectives
- Use different lanes and heights to create a useful 2v1 in the wide channel.
- Coordinate movements between units and adapt to pressure.
- Explore solutions under pressure, then use one successful solution in the final game.
Equipment: Two full-size goals, balls, two sets of bibs, flat markers and cones.
Explore the positional problem
Organization
Right centre-back, pivot, right interior, right fullback, winger and centre-forward against the defending left-back, left centre-back, left interior and winger. Use the right half-space and touchline from halfway to the box. Rotate players in the same role after each bout so all squad members practise.
Game task
Start at the centre-back. The centre-forward can check short, protect and lay off to connect midfield, then threaten behind. Release the winger or overlapping fullback into the final channel for a cutback to the arriving interior. Defenders counter toward the halfway gate after regaining.
Coach observation
Fullback, interior and winger occupy different lanes; the receiver can see both pressure and the next option.
Roles to connect
- Fullback: time the support run after reading the winger.
- Interior: receive between lines and connect the third player.
- Far winger / pivot: provide the switch and protect balance.
Sample club session. Adjust space, load and challenge for the age group and players; all diagrams retain 11v11 / 4-3-3 roles.
