TEAM TACTICAL PRINCIPLE

Move in relation to opponents and teammates so forward play becomes possible.

SUB-PRINCIPLE 01

Vertical and diagonal options

Open a passing lane beyond or beside the opponent’s cover shadow.

Blue wash: Defending half · Gold box: Forward passing lanes · Gold rings: key roles

Required player actions

  • 6 moves diagonally beyond the striker's cover shadow as 3 receives.
  • 8 takes a different height and lane from 6 so the next pass can break another line.
  • 2 opens an angle on the far side rather than standing directly behind an opponent.

SUB-PRINCIPLE 02

Central or wide overloads

Create a spare player where the ball can reach them.

Blue wash: Defending half · Gold box: Forward passing lanes · Gold rings: key roles

Required player actions

  • 2 joins 7 and 8 when the team can support a useful numerical advantage on the right.
  • 6 shifts underneath the combination to offer another connection and protect a turnover.
  • 4 carries toward midfield when doing so draws a defender and frees a teammate.

SUB-PRINCIPLE 03

Lose your marker

Change position or speed to receive away from immediate pressure.

Blue wash: Defending half · Gold box: Forward passing lanes · Gold rings: key roles

Required player actions

  • 8 checks away from the ball before moving into the marker's blind side.
  • 9 changes direction sharply enough to offer a clear receiving lane or release a teammate.
  • 6 passes when the receiver separates, rather than after the defender has recovered.

SUB-PRINCIPLE 04

Runs behind the line

Blue wash: Defending half · Gold box: Forward passing lanes · Gold rings: key roles

Required player actions

  • 9 starts the run when the ball carrier can play forward, checking the defensive line first.
  • 7 curves the run from wide to remain onside and separate from the fullback.
  • 8 holds or releases the pass according to the runner's timing and the goalkeeper's depth.

SUB-PRINCIPLE 05

Support a pressured teammate

Offer an immediate outlet at an angle the receiver can use.

Blue wash: Defending half · Gold box: Forward passing lanes · Gold rings: key roles

Required player actions

  • 6 moves into the pressured fullback's view and offers a safe diagonal outlet.
  • The nearest interior comes toward the ball when the forward route is closed.
  • 1 and the centre-backs reposition behind play so the escape pass can continue across the pitch.
