Choose the next action after a turnover

17:00-18:30 · Northbridge Training Ground · Field 3

90-minute sample plan22 players / 2 goalkeepersCreated by Riley Lane · With Avery Fox

Session objectives

  1. Recognize whether to attack or secure after a regain, and press or recover after a loss.
  2. Scan early, receive with a next action and recognize the advantage.
  3. Explore solutions under pressure, then use one successful solution in the final game.

Equipment: Two full-size goals, balls, two sets of bibs, flat markers and cones.

Explore the positional problem

Organization

11v11 in both teams’ 4-3-3 on a full pitch. Start with a contested pass near the right half-space; all players keep their match positions. Coach restarts alternate who wins the ball. Rotate players in the same role after each bout so all squad members practise.

Game task

On a regain, look forward and counter if the route is open; retain if it is closed. On a loss, nearest player affects the ball, pivot protects the central outlet and back line protects depth.

Coach observation

The first action fits the picture. Supporting players give different options rather than all chasing the ball.

Roles to connect

  • Nearest player: decide whether the ball can be affected now.
  • Pivot / interiors: offer a forward connection or block the central counter.
  • Back four / GK: protect depth and reconnect as the game changes.

Sample club session. Adjust space, load and challenge for the age group and players; all diagrams retain 11v11 / 4-3-3 roles.
