Attack the delivery

Read the flight and compete under control.

Required player actions

  • Centre-backs 4 and 5 read the flight, move toward a reachable delivery and compete with balance.
  • Goalkeeper 1 makes an early, clear claim or stay call and sets for the next attempt.
  • Full-backs 2 and 3 stay aware of runners beyond the first contact and protect the far-side finish.

Starting picture · Blue: Northbridge · Sand: opposition · Gold rings: focus players · White dot: ball

A starting picture for the practice, with the focus players highlighted. Both teams keep their 4-3-3 roles; movement and decisions develop through live play.

Organization

Full pitch, 11v11 including goalkeepers; both teams keep 4-3-3 roles. Start from an opponent right corner with live runners and varied deliveries into the near or central goal area.

Practice task

Goalkeeper 1 communicates the claim decision; centre-backs 4 and 5 judge who can attack the flight while the other covers. Full-backs 2 and 3 track runners beyond the challenge; continue play after every touch.

What to observe

On four of six deliveries, a defender or goalkeeper reaches the first contest with balance and supporting cover, preventing a free first attempt on goal.

Progression

The taker mixes driven and lofted deliveries without announcing the target; defenders must decide from the flight rather than a preset sequence.
