Look for a forward first action

Scan as possession changes; a supporting layoff can also release forward play.

Required player actions

  • 6 scans forward as the interception becomes possible.
  • 8 opens the body to connect the next forward pass.
  • 9 separates from the centre-back without moving offside.

Intercept and connect

Starting picture · Blue: Northbridge · Sand: opposition · Gold rings: focus players · White dot: ball

A starting picture for the practice, with the focus players highlighted. Both teams keep their 4-3-3 roles; movement and decisions develop through live play.

Organization

22 players, two 4-3-3 teams, a full-size pitch and two goals. Begin with the opposition building through midfield; the defending pivot can intercept a pass into its striker.

Practice task

On the regain, 6 reads the direct pass to 9 and the connection through 8. Continue into an unrestricted attack; retain possession if both routes close.

What to observe

The first action uses the available forward lane rather than a predetermined pass.

Progression

Allow the opposition interior to recover closer to 6, changing whether the direct pass or a supporting layoff is available.
