Continue forward when possible

Connect the next pass or carry while the route remains open.

Required player actions

  • 8 checks whether the next forward lane remains open.
  • 7 runs beyond the next defender while staying onside.
  • 9 adjusts the supporting run to the carrier’s pressure.

Keep the second action forward

Starting picture · Blue: Northbridge · Sand: opposition · Gold rings: focus players · White dot: ball

A starting picture for the practice, with the focus players highlighted. Both teams keep their 4-3-3 roles; movement and decisions develop through live play.

Organization

22 players, two 4-3-3 teams, a full-size pitch and two goals. Start from a midfield regain with 6 able to connect to 8; all other players remain in their match positions.

Practice task

After the first forward pass, 8 decides whether to carry, release 7 or combine with 9. Opponents recover freely and the attack continues to either goal.

What to observe

The second action preserves an existing advantage without forcing a closed route.

Progression

Let the opposition fullback choose to press 7 or protect depth, changing the next action.
