Finish with limited touches

Read the goalkeeper and defenders, then use the touches the chance needs.

Required player actions

  • 9 checks the goalkeeper before the ball arrives and selects a finishing surface early.
  • 8 takes a preparation touch only when it improves the available shot or pass.
  • 11 stays ready for the far-side finish or rebound while remaining onside.

Starting picture · Blue: Northbridge · Sand: opposition · Gold rings: focus players · White dot: ball

A starting picture for the practice, with the focus players highlighted. Both teams keep their 4-3-3 roles; movement and decisions develop through live play.

Organization

11v11, full pitch, two goals, both teams in 4-3-3 with normal offside. Start with 7 able to deliver toward 9 and the far winger.

Practice task

Finish the available chance with as few touches as the situation needs. Allow a controlling touch, layoff or extra pass when it creates a better chance.

What to observe

The receiver chooses the surface and target early and avoids a needless touch that closes the shooting window.

Progression

Vary deliveries along the ground and through the air within the players' capabilities, with defenders fully active.
