Support behind

Follow the attack to connect the next action and help retain possession.

Required player actions

  • 6 follows underneath without entering the carrier’s lane.
  • The near fullback offers a diagonal backward connection.
  • The supporting interior stays available if the forward route closes.

An underneath connection for the counter

Starting picture · Blue: Northbridge · Sand: opposition · Gold rings: focus players · White dot: ball

A starting picture for the practice, with the focus players highlighted. Both teams keep their 4-3-3 roles; movement and decisions develop through live play.

Organization

22 players, two 4-3-3 teams, a full-size pitch and two goals. Begin from a regain by 6 and an initial forward connection to 8.

Practice task

As 8 and 7 advance, 6 follows underneath and 2 offers a wider support angle. Retain through either player if the attack is slowed, then continue toward goal.

What to observe

The carrier has a secure supporting option without losing the forward threats.

Progression

Ask recovering opponents to block either the pivot or fullback connection, allowing the attackers to find the other.
