TEAM PRINCIPLECreate attacking shapeSUB-PRINCIPLE

Height, width and depth

Stretch the opponent in different directions while keeping support available.

Required player actions

  • 9 stays high enough to occupy the centre-backs without losing an onside connection.
  • 7 and 11 offer width; 2 and 3 support at a different height from their winger.
  • 1, 4 and 5 provide depth behind the ball so the team can recycle or switch.
COACHING QUESTION

Stretch the first press

Starting picture · Blue: Northbridge · Sand: opposition · Gold rings: focus players · White dot: ball

A starting picture for the practice, with the focus players highlighted. Both teams keep their 4-3-3 roles; movement and decisions develop through live play.

Organization

11v11 on a full pitch with two goals, both teams in 4-3-3 and normal offside. Restart with 1 against an active high press.

Practice task

Play to either goal. Before 1 releases, 9 offers height, the wingers widen and the back line gives depth; keep adapting as the press moves.

What to observe

The first receiver has usable space and at least two different supporting directions.

Progression

Let the opposition alternate a narrow front three and a wide press without announcing the choice.
